The Truth About These ‘Jewish’ Politicians

. Last week AFP dissected fictitious stories
surrounding claims that Adolf Hitler was
Jewish, a popular legend various elements
have circulated for their own often-conflicting
reasons. Now for the autopsy table: similar
rumors about other well-known figures.
First of all, there is a claim Hillary Rodham Clinton
is Jewish. The origin of this story was quite
simply a total fabrication. An Internet intriguer,
known for starting rumors to see how far they go,
spread the word Hillary’s family name was originally
Rodamski. Not true. The same provocateur
later spun a cleverly crafted story that Sarah Palin
was Jewish, complete with phony “links” that went
nowhere. Mrs. Palin loves Israel but, like Mrs. Clinton,
if she does have Jewish blood, it’s never been
documented.
The more widely heralded claim about Mrs.
Clinton’s origins arose from disingenuous campaign
rhetoric from Mrs. Clinton herself. During
her first Senate bid, Mrs. Clinton courted Jewish
votes by mentioning her “Jewish grandfather.”
Many jumped on this story, but here are the
facts: After Mrs. Clinton’s maternal grandfather
died, Mrs. Clinton’s grandmother married again,
this time to a Jewish man, Max Rosenberg. This “Jewish grandfather” to whom Mrs. Clinton referred
was not really her “grandfather,” but rather
her step-grandfather. Mrs. Clinton’s mother did
have a half-sister who converted to Judaism but
that doesn’t make Mrs. Clinton Jewish, either.
What about the Rockefellers? The oft-touted “proof” the Rockefellers are Jewish stems from a
selective misreading of Stephen Birmingham’s
1971 book, The Grandees, in which the author
mentioned the name “Rockefeller” can be found in
Malcolm Stern’s rare 1960 genealogical study, Americans of Jewish Descent.
However, those citing Birmingham failed to
read what he went on to relate: The Rockefellers
referenced by Stern descend from a Jewish
woman, Helen Gratz, who married Godfrey Rockefeller,
a second cousin to the famous sons of John
D. Rockefellers — Nelson, David, etc.
So while there may be Jewish blood in the John
D. Rockefeller line (and thus far there have only
been unsubstantiated rumors to that effect) the
most widely circulated story (referenced above) is
not proof at all.
How about the Roosevelts? In truth, most of the
widely cited Internet “facts” about their purported
Jewish ancestry are repetitions of undocumented
stories going back to the 1930s.
And while Franklin Roosevelt’s presidency
was — as Joseph P. Kennedy once accurately described
it — “a Jewish production,” FDR and his
wife (a cousin on the Roosevelt side) were themselves
known to privately make anti-Jewish remarks,
a surprise to those who worship at the
Roosevelt altar. But today many Jews say “FDR
didn’t do enough to stop the Holocaust,” despite
his role in sparking the war against Hitler.
Despite this, there is some ambiguous evidence
pointing toward possible Jewish ancestry in the
Roosevelt line. On Feb. 5, 1982 The London Jewish
Chronicle reported FDR “had [a] Jewish great grandmother,”
citing famed Rabbi Steven Wise as
a source. However, the story mentions an otherwise
unknown relative, Esther Levy, whose name
never appears in popular lore relating to FDR’s alleged
heritage. But, years ago, American Heritage did report FDR’s mother’s family — the Delanos —
were of Jewish origin, an interesting detail since
FDR’s mother was said to be “anti-Semitic.”
One more. Many think former CIA director
George Tenet — a Christian of Greek heritage — is
Jewish. The rumor stems from a mistake by Parade,
the Sunday magazine. On Nov. 19, 1995, Parade published a front-page picture of three top
CIA figures. Two were Jewish: director John
Deutch and executive director Nora Slatkin. The
third person pictured, Tenet, was misidentified as
David Cohen, the former CIA director of operations,
who is Jewish.
Although Parade corrected its error in its next
issue, after Tenet later became CIA director he was
incorrectly “remembered” as one of “the three
Jews” on Parade’s cover and one researcher even
claimed Tenet was actually David Cohen operating
under the name “George Tenet.” Great theory —
but not true.
