Weldon’s
Hysterical Propaganda
By Michael Collins Piper
 |
With
veteran Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) aging and visibly battered from
ongoing cancer treatments, this on top of a previous bout with a
brain tumor, his fellow Keystone State Republicans are angling to
succeed him, pushing hard to win key support and campaign contributions
from Pennsylvania’s large and influential pro-Israel community,
which boasts of its ability to “tip the balance” in
state elections.
Rep. Curt Weldon has been the most audacious of all. Weldon has
put his name on a hysterically titled book, containing an equally
hysterical thesis, charging, as summarized by The Washington
Post, that Iran is hiding Osama bin Laden, is preparing
terrorist attacks against the United States, has a crash program
to build an atomic bomb and, as a Shiite country, is the chief sponsor
of what is a largely Sunni-directed insurgency in Iraq.
Weldon’s book, titled, Countdown to Terror: The
Top- Secret Information that Could Prevent the Next Terrorist Attack
on America . . . and How the CIA Has Ignored It, is
apparently based on information provided by a long-discredited Iranian
exile, Fereidoun Mahdavi, whom, in the book, Weldon has given the
moniker “Ali.”
Even the most cursory read of the Weldon production sounds as though
the allegations were lifted directly from the “playbook”
used by the pro-Israel neo-conservative network to stoke up American
fears of Saddam Hussein before the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
Most of the “evidence” about Iraq’s supposed arsenal
of nuclear weapons of mass destruction—ostensibly aimed at
New York, Miami and Beverly Hills, as well as every little village
and hamlet in America—came from a corrupt and discredited
Iraqi exile who was known for his trafficking with Israel’s
intelligence service, Mossad.
Now Weldon, along with his friends in the neo-conservative fear-mongering
racket and their allies in the Israeli lobby, is trying to pump
up public hysteria about Iran, using the same kind of propaganda
based on agenda-driven sources.
However, because of his Senate ambitions and his fervent bid to
curry favor with the pro-Israel community in his home state and
nationwide, Weldon has thrown accuracy
out the window and appended his name to a volume that is nothing
more than propaganda and disinformation.
And he has no shame in doing it.
